Customized Media Days: A Day in the Life

You’ve hired a celebrity, retired athlete, or well-known newsmaker to help give your brand a major boost. Now, you need to maximize that investment. This was one of the reasons why KEF Media developed the Customized Media Day. It’s a tactic that takes full advantage of time, resources, and talent to produce the highest level of results for your organization or company.

A Customized Media Day is a condensed time frame filled with a variety of media tactics. The name says it all–your timeline will be customized to fit the marketing and exposure goals we outline during strategic planning. KEF Media has found that a Customized Media Day works best for clients with five to eight hours of celebrity time. To help you better understand this powerful tool, we’ve created a sample schedule of what your CMD to look like. In this example, we have planned for eight media hours with our celebrity spokesperson.

6:00 am – Grab your coffee and get ready for an exciting, busy day. Production crews will be on set to make sure that everything is prepared to tell your brand story. We will tailor and execute a set design to ensure the environment is dynamic and engaging.

7:30 am – Spokesperson arrives. The hair and makeup process begins. We have found that it is key to schedule this necessary part of the day separately from the allotted time your spokesperson will be on set. Furthermore, it is vital that the spokesperson’s team understands in advance that hair, makeup, and wardrobe time is not included in the media hours scheduled.

9:00 - 11:30 am – We begin our Customized Media Day with a Satellite Media Tour. We will have your spokesperson booked to speak with multiple television outlets. Interviews will be scheduled typically in 5 to 10 minute windows, back to back. Some of these interviews will be broadcast live while other outlets may choose to record and use them at a later date. We can also schedule interviews with radio during the SMT time.

11:30 - 11:45 am – Talent Break

11:45 am - 1:15 pm – After the Satellite Media Tour, we will progress to interviews over streaming platforms. This will be similar to the interview process from the previous section. However, streaming interviews allow for more time, more questions and conversation, and can feel more exclusive. Based on your audience, we can plan for social media live segments as well.

1:15 - 1:45 pm – Talent Lunch

1:45 - 3:15 pm – Now, we move forward to the in-person interview/junket portion of the day. We will assign interview times to national and local reporters. They will come on set with their camera crew to record segments and interviews with your spokesperson. This is similar to a movie junket—a way to get as many individual in-person interviews done by different outlets but without the spokesperson needing to travel.

3:15 - 3:45 pm – Talent Break

3:45 - 4:45 pm - It’s a crucial part of the day—where we leave the set and travel to select national media outlets or major local news stations. KEF Media works with our clients to identify the media outlets that will reach the highest number of their brand’s target audience. We will shape our Customized Media Day around those prime opportunities and escort our talent to those outlets for interviews on set. We’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with teams from Access Hollywood, Extra, and WNYW-TV just to name a few.

4:45 - 5:00 pm: National/local media in-studio interview

5:00 pm: That’s a wrap! You’ve accomplished a monumental variety of brand visibility tactics in just one day. And it doesn’t end with that. A successful Customized Media Day will establish a positive relationship between your brand and media outlets going forward–making them more likely to reach back out for future projects.

As you can see from the last section of the day, a Customized Media Day tends to work best in New York or Los Angeles, where the bulk of national media calls home. This way we can pick a prime set location for the SMT, streaming, and junket interviews while still being able to easily travel to different outlets for live in-studio interviews. However, KEF Media would be excited to brainstorm with you on ways we could adapt this strategy to your location and audience. We have found that our clients–and their celebrity spokespersons–love having a one-stop-shop that can optimize brand growth through different platforms. KEF Media looks forward to working with you!
